Made visible behind the moon’s edge during a full solar eclipse, erupting flares are highlighted in brilliant relief. The sun’s surface streams filaments of plasma and coronal superheated mass from its heaving surface twisted and shaped by the vast magnetic fields above the sun’s surface.

These solar flares are massive explosions, often above sun spots, that pour radiation across the full electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to X-rays and gamma rays. These huge solar storms have a direct effect across the solar system and often bombard Earth as the flare’s trajectory crosses our orbit.
